Online Donation Processing Options
During March 2005, I spent about 2 days (aka - a non-exhaustive search) just looking at sites in hopes of developing a brief laundry list of products that are being used to process online donations.
There are quite a few smaller nonprofits that don't have the resources to develop custom solutions. If you're one of them, this brief list will hopefully save you a little research time along the way:
Of the options noted below, 'Just Give' and 'Network for Good' appear to be the least expensive of the ones that I've seen and are both geared directly toward non-profits (note - as this was a point-in-time quick-study, the individual nonprofit references are bound to change over time - don't panic if you get a 404 error along the way)
www.JustGive.org - used by Zoom House, CEAP, and others - user leaves the site to enter their donation, but the page they arrive at is customized for the charity - 3% of the gathered donations go to JustGive to cover transaction fees.
http://www.blackbaud.com/ - used by Catholic Charities - assuming that it may integrate with existing accounting apps that they are using.
Network for Good - used by Project for Pride in Living, and Cornerstone (www.cornerstonemn.org) - initial look sounds like they take 3% of each donation.
PayPal - I noticed several leveraging this very basic functionality and have used it myself on church-specific fund-raising efforts - simple to use, but not all that user friendly. Northwest Youth and Family Services is leveraging the approach relatively cleanly...
www.ClickandPledge.com - used by The Center for Victims of Torture - 4.75% processing fees
www.verisign.com - used by Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches - a variety of setup charges and product options are available, but it doesn't seem as cost effective as some of the non-profit angles.
www.authorize.net - used by "House of Charity" in Minneapolis - looks like a for-profit model similar to a verisign.
I noticed organizations like Washburn Child Guidance Center leveraging services that were probably provided by the Internet Service Provider (visi.com) as well, so your ISP may have options for you to explore - benefit being that you can more closely control the look and feel of the online form...
